G. Scott Dean, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who was among the first orthopedists in the country to earn subspecialty certification in sports medicine. He joined Piedmont Orthopedics in 2000.

Dr. Dean specializes in treatment of shoulder and knee disorders, as well as arm and leg trauma. He performs advanced shoulder and knee surgery, including shoulder and knee replacements, arthroscopic shoulder and knee instability surgery, meniscal repair and rotator cuff repair. He also performs the latest cartilage repair techniques, including autologous chondrocyte implantation and allograft osteochondral transplantation.


Focus on Patients

Dr. Dean works closely with patients who have shoulder and knee problems to help them regain mobility and function.

“I enjoy meeting and working with patients to help them achieve their goal to get back to an active life,” Dr. Dean says. “The patient and I are partners with shared responsibilities, focused on the best possible outcome for their orthopedic problems.”


Background and Interests

A native of Hickory, Dr. Dean grew up in Raleigh, NC. He earned his medical degree at Duke University School of Medicine and served his internship and residency at Duke University Medical Center before going on to complete a fellowship in sports medicine, studying under renowned knee, elbow and shoulder surgeon, James Andrews, MD, at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama.

He and his wife, Mary, have two children, Connor and Emily. In his spare time, Dr. Dean enjoys family activities and watching his children participate in sports and performing arts. He also plays tennis and swims for fitness.

Community Involvement
Dr. Dean volunteers in the community, along with other doctors in the practice, as team orthopedic physician for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartans. He also enjoys participating in volunteer work through his church, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
