James Nitka, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who joined Piedmont Orthopedics in 2007. He has practiced in Greensboro since 1990.

Dr. Nitka performs all types of orthopedic surgery, but has a special emphasis on spinal disorders. He completed a fellowship at the Texas Institute for Spinal Disorders and is the co-author of a chapter in a book on spinal disorders.

Trained in the latest minimally invasive surgery techniques, he performs miscrodiscectomy, anterior cervical spine surgery, lumbar fusion, peripheral nerve decompression for wrist and elbow, and general orthopedic surgery.

Focus on Patients

Dr. Nitka especially enjoys helping patients become more active through treatment.

“My best joy is seeing a patient return to his or her normal lifestyle and have improved daily function,” he says.

Background and Interests

Born on a U.S. Air Force base in Japan, Dr. Nitka became interested in orthopedics as a high school student, traveling to Mexico as a teenager to visit children with polio. He received his medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine and completed his residency at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Nitka and his wife, Melanie, have a son, Caleb. In his spare time, Dr. Nitka enjoys playing golf and fishing. His hobbies include repair and restoration of watches and clocks.

Community Involvement
Dr. Nitka volunteers in the community, along with other doctors in the practice, as team orthopedic physician for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartans. He and his family are members of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
