N. Michael Xu, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who joined Piedmont Orthopedics in August 2014.

Dr. Xu (pronounced "Choo") performs all types of orthopedic surgery, but has a special interest in hand conditions and surgery as well as knee and hip replacement surgery. He has completed advanced training in Oxford® partial knee replacement surgery and in direct anterior approach hip replacement surgery.

Focus on Patients

Dr. Xu believes it is important to treat the patient as a whole, rather than focusing only on the orthopedic issue that brought him or her to the office.

"I enjoy working as a team with patients on the mental and physical aspects of successful treatment, so they can reach their full potential," he says.

Background and Interests

Dr. Xu was born in Shanghai, China, and came to the U.S. with his family at age 7. When he was 14, the family moved to Greensboro, where he attended Grimsley High School. He and his wife, Ashley Xu, MD, who is a pediatrician, have a son, Emerson, and are expecting another child in November 2014. In his spare time. Dr. Xu enjoys snow skiing, water sports and traveling with his family. For exercise, he plays tennis regularly.
