Shaili Deveshwar, MD, is a board-certified rheumatologist who joined Piedmont Orthopedics in 2013 after 13 years at the Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics Center (SMOC) in Greensboro. SMOC - a division of Southeastern Orthopaedic Specialists, like Piedmont Orthopedics - closed in 2013.

Dr. Deveshwar specializes in rheumatology. She sees patients in our satellite office at 1313 Carolina Street, Suite 101, in Greensboro.

Conditions Dr. Deveshwar treats include all types of arthritis, in addition to osteoporosis and autoimmune diseases. Known for providing care that is patient-centered and on the forefront of medicine, she has been honored as one of America's "Top Physicians" annually since 2009 and also has been chosen as one of America's Most Compassionate Doctors and as a Champion of Medicine. She also received a Patients' Choice Award as one of North Carolina's favorite physicians.

In addition to providing patient care, Dr. Deveshwar is actively involved in clinical research. Her patients sometimes have the opportunity to receive groundbreaking treatments that are being tested in clinical trials.

Focus on Patients

Dr. Deveshwar enjoys working closely with her patients and believes it is important for the doctor and the patient to work together as a team.

"I spend a lot of time with my patients," she says. "I listen to them and explain the diagnosis. We make decisions regarding their disease condition and their treatment plan together after looking at all of the options that are available to them. My patients and I work as a team to prevent progression of their disease process, to preserve joint function, and to achieve the best possible outcome and quality of life for them."

Working in an orthopedics practice gives her the opportunity to interact with other specialists in ways that benefit her patients, Dr. Deveshwar says. Because many rheumatology patients have problems affecting their joints, bones and connective tissue, she and the orthopedic surgeons at Piedmont Orthopedics can "work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients with joint disease."

Background and Interests

Dr. Deveshwar completed her internship , a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics, and a fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, OK. During her fellowship, she had the honor of working closely with world-renowned rheumatologists Morris Reichlin, MD, a researcher who discovered several of the key antibodies involved in lupus, and John Harley, MD, who has been involved in lupus genetics research. After finishing her fellowship, she worked as an instructor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center providing patient care, performing research, and teaching students and residents. She went on to work for four years as a rheumatologist in private practice in New Orleans before relocating to Greensboro in 2000.

In her free time, Dr. Deveshwar enjoys exercise, reading, painting, and gardening.
