Peter W. Whitfield, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who joined Piedmont Orthopedics in 2013. Dr. Whitfield previously was an orthopedic surgeon for 33 years at the Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics Center (SMOC) in Greensboro. SMOC - a division of Southeastern Orthopaedic Specialists, like Piedmont Orthopedics - closed in 2013.
Dr. Whitfield sees patients in our satellite office at 1313 Carolina Street, Suite 101, in Greensboro.
He performs a wide variety of orthopedic procedures, including arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery, rotator cuff surgery, total joint replacement and general orthopedic surgery. He has been chosen annually since 2003 as a "Top Physician" or a "Top Doctor" in America. Known for his skill and his compassionate care, Dr. Whitfield also has received a Patients' Choice Award recognizing him as one of North Carolina's favorite physicians.
Focus on Patients Dr. Whitfield is dedicated to helping patents with orthopedic injuries and illnesses recover as much function as possible so they can return to their normal activities. His philosophy of medicine is to "take no challenge lightly and strive for excellence."
Background and Interests A native of Providence, RI, Dr. Whitfield earned his medical degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC.
He and his wife have been married since 1974 and have three grown sons. One son is an orthopedic surgeon, another is an environmental attorney, and the third is a media specialist.
When not working, Dr. Whitfield enjoys all types of outdoor activities. He especially enjoys hiking, swimming, windsurfing, snow skiing, and visiting national parks.
